Not sanding a freshly laid hardwood floor and finishing it as is makes the installation less messy and time consuming but it would be a mistake. The homeowner complained of several swirl marks throughout the entire floor along with the stain appearing to be lighter around the edge of each room. A maroon pad had been used with the 100 grit paper on the edger to minimize edger marks. They perform well when leveling a floor or prepping for a finish coat. Using a worn sanding screen to sand between coats of finish can leave spiderweb like defects in floor finish. A random pattern can be hard to achieve when all the planks are the same length but you can do it using offcuts from previous rows to start new rows. A laminate flooring stagger pattern is ideally random with spacing between end joints between 6 and 10 inches depending on the plank width.
